Chapter 16

Seico Brighton Office

A Week After the Skydive

“We just think it’s too soon. It’s been barely a week since we lost Asher…” Kiara’s mother-in-law had to stop in between words to take a breath before continuing. “I’m sorry, it just feels unreal to say that still.”

“I know, I’m the same. Every time I think of what happened it’s like I’m suffocating all over again,” Kiara agreed. “But I have to go in. I need to tell everyone at work about the funeral and I need to just clear my desk of the outstanding cases. People still need me to settle their claims, I can’t just let them down.”

“But surely someone else can do your work for a few more weeks? And you can just message your secretary about the funeral. The girls need you here, surely, it’s just too soon to leave them.”

“It’ll just be for the morning, I promise. And they have you and Peter here.”

“Did someone just take my name in vain?” Peter said as he lumbered into the lounge and dropped into his favourite chair. Unlike his son, who had been relatively fit, Peter was morbidly obese and was never happier than when he was snuggled into his favourite chair and allowed to nod off.

“Kiara wants to go back to work, and I was just saying I think she should take more time off,” Judy replied.

“I just said it was for the morning, not the whole day.”

“It’ll do her good to get out of the house. We can look after the girls. You go, darling, don’t worry about a thing.”

“Thanks, Peter, and I won’t be long, I promise,” Kiara replied, giving Peter and Judy a kiss each on the cheek and leaving the room before her mother-in-law could reply.

“Poor love,” Peter said to Judy, “she is far too young to be a widow.”

“I’m sorry,” Judy said to her husband as she started to cry again. She left the lounge, tears streaming down her face, just as the twins came into the room.

“Is Granny all right, Pops?” Mia asked Peter as she and Jasmin perched on the edge of his chair.

“I don’t think any of us are, my darlings, I don’t think any of us are.”

In the week following the skydive, Kiara’s life had been a wave of emotions. It had never occurred to her that she would have to live her life without Asher, it had been a given that they would grow old together, yet here she was suddenly a single mother of twins facing a future that was totally alien to her. Not only had she lost the love of her life, but whenever she tried to picture him in her mind, all she could see was him crashing into the airfield in front of her. If it wasn’t for Mia and Jasmin, she had no idea if she would be strong enough to get up each morning, let alone survive a full day, but they needed her more now than ever and she had to find the strength to keep going for them.
